Catalyst(s) for the oxidation of NO to NO2 using O2 as theoxidant, will be developed in this proposed study. These catalyst(s) willbe used in air pollution control systems to treat flue gas resulting fromstationary sources, including coal-fired electrical utility boilers. Byconverting NO in flue gas into NO2 simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO2from the flue gas can be accomplished. The targeted catalysts will bevery active and stable for NO oxidation to NO2 but inactive forconversion of SO2 to SO3.Titanates of iron, cobalt, zinc, nickel, and manganese will be preparedusing co-precipitation methods. These titanates will be used either ascatalysts or supports for catalyst preparations. Supported metal oxidecatalysts will be prepared using one of the oxides of iron, manganese, cobalt, zinc, or nickel as the active component or either TiO2 or metaltitanates as the support. With either TiO2 or metal titanates as thesupport, rather than Al2O3, the stability of these catalysts will beimproved against poisoning by SO2 present in the flue gas. The catalystsprepared will be tested on their ability to oxidize NO to NO2 with oxygenin flue gas.
