This project will develop three prototypical applications of Artificial Neural Networks (NN) in areas of Special Education and teaching basic arithmetic facts to Learning Disabled students. The three applications are symbiotic: a student simulator, a student assessor, and a CAI training module will be developed in simplified, first-pass form. The three tools will be used together to optimize each of the capabilities.Summary of anticipated results and implications of the approach (Phase I & Phase II), and
Potential Commercial Applications:The "machine learning" or "self-adaptive" capabilities of Neural Networks should permit the three tools to perform their associated tasks well in a wider range of applications than current technologies and tools. Improved arithmetic computer-aided training and assessment should result for students with LD's. Eventually, commercial products could be developed. Such products could reduce instructional and assessment costs, and also improve the quality of Special Education available to many students.
