A Phase I proposal to develop a functional specification and operational prototype of a technologically sophisticated writing tool for visually impaired students. Provisionally entitled COAUTH0R", the program will be implemented as an enhanced-function word processor supported by an assemblage of related integral utilities that include: a function for converting text and system messages to synthetic speech and large-type formats; a spelling checker; an online thesaurus; an information storage and filing function; a software calculator; a telecommunications module; and a variety of editorial assistance functions that employ the techniques of artificial intelligence. The tool is expected to find additional use as an unusually powerful word processor for visually impaired office workers and professionals in a broad range of occupations. Anticipated Result The development will result in several significant contributions to the education of the blind and visually impaired and will also help to create occupational opportunities for this group.
