The project goal is to build a 4’ tall device that converts recycled carbon dioxide, water and renewable electricity into a widely used chemical, formic acid. The work, for the first-time innovates through the integration of multiple innovative electrolyzer components and materials into a single novel design. The purpose is to develop the first industrially-relevant process that uses CO2 as a feedstock to make products, rather than to emit it as a by-product of making other products, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance the energy efficiency and security of the United States and world
