The removal of sulfur and CO2 from hydrocarbon streams and power plant effluents is a major problem. Because the sulfur is normally in the form of H2S, this acid gas is scrubbed using aqueous amine solutions that are difficult to control with conventional technology. CO2 scrubbing may soon be required to reduce green house gases. This project will develop Raman scattering technology for on-line, real-time monitoring of amine streams, in order to improve their efficiency in scrubbing H2S and CO2 from hydrocarbon streams and power plant effluents.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:Improved control of amine and acid gas concentrations would allow refineries, natural gas processors, and power plants to more efficiently scrub sulfur and CO2, saving energy, time, and financial resources
