High-speed networks and high-performance computer systems use schedulers to optimize resource utilization, maximize yield, and increase user satisfaction. State-of-the-art systems schedÂule either network resources (e.g., bandwidth) or computer resources (e.g., CPUs, memory, storage, software licenses). This project will develop a scheduler that simultaneously schedules both network and computer resources, thereby achieving greater resource utilization. The approach involves the extension of research in the area of in-advance bandwidth reservation systems, in order to achieve two scheduling objectives: (1) schedule in a user-provided time slot and (2) schedule at the earliest time possible.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Current and future applications will require both network and computer resources to be allocated. This new scheduler should enhance the effectiveness with which high-speed computer networks and high-performance computer systems are used
