This project will develop superconducting tapes needed for the development of very high magnetic field superconducting magnets (12 Tesla or greater) which are used in high energy particle colliders. Thallium-based superconductors will be prepared on biaxially textured flexible metallic substrates. Phase I will provide the proof-of-principle demonstration that the thallium-based superconducting tapes can be produced with the required high critical current density and function at the required high magnetic fields.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:
Thallium-based superconducting tapes will have use in very high magnetic field applications such as superconducting magnets and also will be applicable to other superconducting devices such as motors and generators transformers as well as in power transmission applications.
