Improved methods for optimization of site selection and improvement of site management are needed for successful introduction of willow (Salix) as a commercial alternative biomass energy source. This project will develop a decision support system for detailed, site specific analysis and improve site management through precision agriculture techniques. Both concepts will be addressed through gradient analysis and will be supported by various geographic information technologies. Samples from existing, small-scale willow growth sites will be used to identify gradients for willow clones. Cost effective aerial imagery will be used to develop appropriate monitoring techniques. An initial decision support system will be developed for willow siting and subsequent monitoring.

Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee:
A system that allows closer-to-optimum selection of growth sites and improved methods for monitoring and managing planted crops will lower overall pesticide and herbicide use and will improve the viability of willow as an alternate energy crop.
