Technology is rapidly developing here and at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to provide fast profiling Conductivity Temperature Density (CTD) systems. Sensor data quality and processing technology have not kept pace with vehicle development. This pro posal outlines approaches to achieve fast response, time constant matching, spacial compatibility, and atsea calibration with NBS traceable standard. Ceramic conductivity and temperature sensor construction and film deposition of sensors permit small sensor size for fast response and insertion into lFiple Point Cells of Water and Gallium temperature standards for at-sea calibration. Microprocessor stored calibrations linearize and response-match sensors Processing techniques provide at-sea data checks to allow more accurate and cost-effective data than are possible through today's technology while requiring less skilled operators.Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee:The development of the proposed integrated temperature and conductivity sensors will permit faster, more accurate and cost-effective CTD ocean profiling from free fall vehicles to depths of 6500 meters than is presently available. A worldwide CTD market exists that is presently estimated at $10,000,000. This product concept should capture 25% to 50% of the present market and open up possibilities to expand the market by use of "ships of opportunity" in major world oceanographic programs.
