The purpose of this Phase I proposal is to investigate the feasibility of developing a comprehensive Failure Engineering and Analysis Toolkit (FEAT) that can be seamlessly integrated with a variety of data tools over ODBC/SQL. The research will focus on mechanical parts failure data and analysis for both the production and design stages of a products life cycle. Elements of FEAT will include a number of reliability and quality assurance tools such as: - Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis -Manufacturing Defect Tracking -Corrective Action Systems -Parts Reliability Prediction -Fault Tree/Hazard Analysis -Cost of QualityPotential commercial application of the research:Successful development of a Failure Engineering and Analysis Toolkit will provide U.S. industry with an integrated and flexible tool that can be used in a multitude of design and manufacturing processes.I t supports companies in theirefforts to meet the quality assurance requirements of ISO 9000.
