This is a proposal for the development of a large vocabulary speech-to-text dictation system that could be used in tactical environments. The system will allow users to create text and generate reports without using a keyboard. The user will not have to go through a lengthy enrollment procedure. The system will allow the use of new words and will perform under varied acoustic conditions. In addition, the system will be portable to facilitate report generation in the field. The main effort in Phase I of the development will consist of developing the prototype and testing its effectiveness in realistic simulations.Anticipated benefits/potential applications:Speech-to-text dictation capability for tactical reporting for applications such as resource and management reports, field observations, cataloguing, cartography, equipment maintenance reports, and other time-critical, eyes-busy, hands-busy environments. Large vocabulary recognition with no or limited enrollment required; capability to add new words to the system.
