Baker Engineering LLC (BE) proposes the research and development of a lightweight, durable, supercharged, two-stroke compression ignition engine: The Baker Heavy-Fuel Engine (BHFE). Design aspects include a unique combination of a durable high-compression two stroke power cylinder, a positive displacement rolling piston compressor, and a lightweight electronically controlled direct injection fuel system. Research will be conducted to optimize supercharger displacement, compression ratio, and combustion chamber design to achieve peak engine power output of 10 hp per cylinder at sea level, low fuel consumption, and engine starting capability at 10,000 ft altitude. For this Phase 1 application, BE will develop a 10 hp per cylinder version of the BHFE in a 120cc displacement engine package. This Phase I program will design and place merit on the technical feasibility of the BHFE concept and create a conceptual design of an integrated propulsion system. Phase I objectives include completion of BHFE performance modeling, supercharger performance verification, cylinder modeling, and a propulsion system design. A Phase I Option includes the design of an exhaust silencer and the creation of detailed component designs and bill of material (BOM) in preparation for manufacturing under a Phase II program.
