This proposal is to perform optical thin film design studies for filters to be used in the mid wave infrared and simultaneously in the long wave infrared regions. In addition to the design studies, thin film materials and deposition processes and monitoring methods will be studied. The ultimate purpose is to develop the technology to enable high performance for military infrared sensors.

This proposal is a research development effort to design, develop, and fabricate six optical filters for wide spectral regions from visible to far infrared wavelengths. A materials process task will develop low loss coatings capable of producing antireflection coatings with very high transmission. After the deposition processes and material selection is concluded, layer thickness designs will be refined. Sample depositions will be made and the filters will be carefully measured and compared to the design performance. Deposition will be performed with computer automation which is being developed under this proposal. Filters studied include antireflection coatings for lenses, afocal mirrors, fold mirrors, beam splitters, cold filters, and wide band antireflection coatings. Samples of all these filters will be fabricated, measured, and delivered to the Army.
