The potential to reduce US Army tactical generator set weights and sizes will be explored through the combined application of High Frequency Alternators and Power Frequency Converters. The application of such technology will improve the mobility and deployability of the tactical equipment as performance requirements become more demanding. High speed alternators can be decreased in size proportionally to their operating speed. Power Frequency Converters provide high quality output while offering other possible features such as starter/generator systems and uninterruptible power. Additional generator set system weight reduction is possible by exploiting the flexibility of solid state power conversion approaches. The feasibility will be determined by systematically achieving the project objectives including determine: The optimum HFA-PFC architecure, The optimum HFA design, The optimum PFC topology, and Identifying the power semiconductor technology. The HFA-PFC interaction with the engine will also be reviewed for potential improvements in efficiency and further size reduction through employing a variable speed approach taking advantage of the engine's dynamic performance range. The product of this effort will be a final report including recommended HFA-PFC topologies for various power ranges, alternative topologies, and preliminary topology designs. also
