The objective of this effort is to develop the requirements and documentation necessary to commercialize and export the Computer-Aided Prototype System (CAPS) as a suitable rapid prototyping tool for a broad cross section of military and commercial command and control (C2) type applications. Project Description: (1) The focus of this Phase I effort will be to reengineer the CAPS architecture and code to improve efficiency and utility for commercialization development during Phase II. (2) Develop a commercial quality users manual. (3) establish Alpha test sites for the current version at Illgen Simulation Technologies, Inc. (ISTI), Monmouth College, the U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command at Fort Monmouth, and the MITRE Corporation. (4) Apply the tool to selected command and control (C2) development systems to develop new requirements and confirm its usefulness. (5) Prepare the tool for full commercialization development during Phase II. This effort will leverage the work performed by Drs. Luqi and Berzins, the developers of this tool and its prototype system description language, who will support ISTI in this project as consultants.

The objective of this program is to create a highly marketable software rapid prototyping, developmental tool capable of supporting the prototyping development, and evolution of software-intensive systems. To achieve this evolution of CAPS from a prototype to a commercial product, the ISTI team has established a series of technical objectives. These include: Create a user friendly, fully-documented, tested, and supported software development tool with an initial focus on rapid prototyping of a software-intensive system. The tool would be capable of producing Ada, C, and C++ code from a system specification written in a prototyping system design language with only minor augmentation on the part of the software developer. This will be true for real-time embedded applications as well. Provide a software support environment required to assist in the design, implementation testing, configuration management, and documentation of CAPS. This environment will contain a series of software development commercial-off-the-shelf tools and will employ current procedures and standards currently used by members of the ISTI team. Develop a library of Ada, C, and C++ objects that will permit reuse of code in a broad cross-section of applications. These objects will also be employed in a number of applications that will be offered with the product for government, industry, and university use. Make provisions for a series of Beta test sites initiated during Phase I of this effort, for user tests and building additional applications. The commercialization plan consists of four related sections. These include a technical plan, a management plan, a marketing plan, and a product support plan. Each of these is treated comprehensively in the Phase II portion of this proposal. The benefits from a well-designed rapid prototyping tool are not only speed of development, but also the reduction of risk and cost via the early elimination of false starts during software system development. The commercialization of CAPS offers a unique approach to rapid prototyping of real time, C2, man-in-the-loop software systems. The potential market for this tool includes the DoD, health and hospital organizations, forest fire fighting units
