The proposed work is based on exploitation and extension of a set of core natural language processing components and tools previously developed by LSI under contracts for other DoD applications. The natural language components previously developed by LSI include data/knowledge bases for lexical information, grammar, and domain semantics and pragmatics for a range of Air Force, Army, Navy, and DARPA applications. The tools to be developed under this effort include lexical, syntactic, and semantic aids for manipulating the associated linguistic and domain knowledge bases.

Benefits:
Anticipated benefits for DoD and commercial applications include the potential utilization of the set of natural language core components and tools for exploitation of the exponentially growing volume of text available in machine-readable form. Such applications include text analysis, query interfaces to data/knowledge bases, explanation generation, foreign language translation, and information retrieval.
