In Phase I, a systematic and complete investigation on the synthesis of cadmium sulfide will be conducted. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) will be synthesized by two methods: 1. Spontaneous reaction between dimethylcadium and hydrogen sulfide, and 2. Reaction of cadmium and sulfur elements by vapor desposition. The CdS powder obtained from these two techniques will be heat-treated by baking out at elevated temperatures under vacuum condition to adjust its stoichiometry. Various analyses, including Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Spark Source Mass Spectroscopy and Energy Dispersion of X-ray analysis, will be performed on each batch of CdS to characterize the purity and stoichiometery. The optimal synthesis parameters will be established.
Benefits: The production of high-quality single crystals of CdS is vital to the Army Stinger-Post Missile Program. At the end of Phase II, we expect to consistently produce CdS single crystals of high quality using the highly pure and stoichiometric CdS starting materials synthesized by the optimal process established in Phase I.
