Conventional battery enclosures made up of metals or plastics and securing battery durability and safety, are not ideal for electric aircrafts due to the weight and durability concerns. TalosTech and University of Delaware (UD) propose to design and develop a novel aircraft structural battery enclosure by 3D printed continuous fiber-reinforced/thermoset composites (lightweight and high strength) which can integrate batteries within aircraft parts (e.g. fuselages and wings). This will effectively reduce the dead weight/space, increase energy density and durability of the aircraft battery systems. In Phase I, we will combine TalosTech’s battery development capability and UD’s composite additive manufacturing technology to demonstrate the feasibility of this creative concept for Orb/eVTOL/UAM applications.
