Phase I

Contract Number: FA8750-20-C-0504
Start Date: 2/13/20    Completed: 2/13/21
Phase I year
2020
Phase I Amount
$140,695
In this Phase I STTR program, FIRST RF and GMU will investigate the interrelated trades of directional antenna hardware capabilities and the operational advantages of spectrum agility for airborne networking. GMU's modeling and simulation (M&S) capabilities combined with the FIRST RF expertise in advanced antenna hardware will provide Air Force with a powerful team to understand the advantages and limitations of multiband directional networking as well as providing a practical hardware approach to realizing an objective system.

Phase II

Contract Number: FA8750-22-C-0137
Start Date: 3/11/22    Completed: 3/8/24
Phase II year
2022
Phase II Amount
$727,758
In recent years there has been a surge in need for high capacity data transfer through operational airborne, maritime, and ground nodes without the use of SATCOM services. Multi-band communications allow for the mitigation of changing propagation, increased throughput, and an ability to adapt as spectrum authorization is allowed. Directional efficient Active Electronic Steered Arrays (AESA) are the major solution for line-of-sight, long range communication links. This phase II effort will continue the network analysis using measured antenna performance to quantify implemented operations of a multi-node, multi-spectrum, communication networks. The key enabling RF sub-systems will be integrated and tested for performance to prove out overall network capability.
