Imagine the number of buildings on every Air Force Base around the world and then imagine having to physically inspect every roof in order to assess damage and prioritize repairs based on the lifespan remaining. The current method of physically inspecting roofs is extremely ineffective, expensive, and dangerous. Statistics from Joint Base Charleston show that the current roof inspection program at this installation alone costs $360,000 a year. Using drone imagery to revamp this process was submitted twice to the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Centerâs (AFIMSC) Innovation Office as part of the âCall for Innovationâ? campaign; however, this technology is insufficient and minimally reduces costs.
