The feasibility of using time-domain terahertz reflection tomography (THz) to map the thickness of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) applied to high temperature exhaust components will be demonstrated. The THz method can measure the thickness of Yttria St

Phase II

Contract Number: FA8650-18-C-5028

A prototype handheld time-domain terahertz reflection sensor for measuring and mapping the thickness ofthermal barrier coatings (TBCs) applied to high temperature exhaust components will be built and tested. The prototype will consist of a Class I Div. 2 certified handheld sensor connected with a lightweight umbilical to the THz control unit. All typical operator functions will be able to be performed through the handheld unit, automating and simplifying the setup process compared with the Phase 1 testing. The prototype will be able to scan any 12 in. sq. area of the tailpipe, including tightly curved areas at 0.1 in. resolution in < 1minute. The sensor will track position allowing 1D or 2D thickness mapping. No data at militarily significant microwave frequencies will be used or collected.
