Laser eye Protection (LEP) and sensor protection currently used by the Air Force incorporates cutting-edge technologies (absorptive dyes and/or reflective technologies) to protect against lasers at a variety of wavelengths in the infrared (IR) and visible portions of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum.Surmet proposes to create Laser eye protective solutions based on its robust ALON Technology. Using conventional powder processing techniques ALON components with very complex geometries has been demonstrated. For the program, Surmet will demonstrate absorption of selective wavelengths in either the visible or IR region by addition of dopants to a matrix of ALON Transparent Ceramic. For the purposes of providing ballistic resistance and shielding from high energy microwaves, Surmet will demonstrate a robust doped-ALON material and also demonstrate the adaptability of its advanced technical concepts to form transparent and conformal components. With success in the Phase I program and a follow on Phase II program, Surmet will scale up the process to produce a minimum of two large doped ALON window blanks. The exact dimensions and shape will be mutually agreed upon with the government. Transmission, absorption (at selected wavelengths) and mechanical properties (flexure strength, ballistic response) of the material will be evaluated using well-polished specimens.
