The interaction of electromagnetic (EM) radiation with living tissue is an important area of current research. Part of this interest is due to the possible health concerns for users of personal communication and military systems. Medical research in the use of EM radiation for such applications as treatment of tumors and microwave imaging is also receiving attention. There is a need for a software tool that would allow for accurate simulation of the EM fields within living tissue. Simulation techniques being used currently have severe computational limitations. Typical problems are so large as to take either too much CPU time or require too much storage for most of today's computers. A technique that has the potential to be effective in these types of simulation problems is the advanced finite element method used in Ansoft's High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). With its advanced tetrahedral meshing and adaptive refinement it should be possible to accurately simulate very complex biological test cases. The use of this tool in simulating such test cases will be explored in this proposed Phase I projects. The result of this work will be an efficient simulation tool for modeling EM radiation in living tissue
