The proposed effort will concentrate on meeting the intense demands of helmet mounted displays and head-up displays by studying the utilization of a novel display technology. This advance has the potential to dramatically increase external efficiencies of luminescent devices in a compact and durable solid-state device. Diffraction based relay optics and reduced power requirements are envisioned. Thus, it is expected that miniature, lightweight and cost effective projection devices can be developed. The proposed Phase I feasibility study will survey the merits of the novel approach and seek to determine the optimum configurations. Using computer models, the proposed effort will design miniature projection devices that generate the required high brightness and high resolution displays for use in a high ambient light environment. The ultimate goal of the work plan will be prototype designs intended for a Phase II advanced development program.
