This proposal describes a program to develop compact, mobile or transportable VLF/LF antenna systems with enhanced performance characteristics due to the incorporation of ultra-low loss High Temperature Superconductor (HTSC) components. Our Phase I program will focus on the development of VLF/LF antenna designs which can most advantageously use HTSC materials fabricated using currently available materials and process technology. The viability of these designs will be evaluated by fabricating and testing selected HTSC components for these antenna systems. Phase II of the program will involve the optimization of the selected design and the construction of a prototype antenna for use in an actual communications system.
