The objective of this proposed effort is to study the feasibility of implementing a model that guides small business in generating software development project status and metrics and in documenting its software development process. Program Support Library and Configuration Management tools and practices will be examined for their ability to maintain project status and metrics required for a mature software organization in a small company. The proposed model would be a methodology independent model for the management of the software development process. In addition to specifying documentation requirements, the proposed model would determine the suitability, as measured against a mature software development process, of current project related practices, such as generating productivity summaries and percent completion reports, current status of the development process, and metrics for use by project managers and overseers in evaluating cost and schedule impacts of proposed system changes.
