Most current operational nanosat propulsion systems are based on cold gas systems. Cold gas systems offer the reliability and simplicity for maneuvering a nanosat. However a cold gas system is not efficient at translating a nanosat large distance due to it's low impulse. Modern hybrid technology offers to increase the typical impulse of 55sec for cold gas to 260 sec for a hybrid propulsion system. SpaceDev is currently engaged in developing safe, reliable and high performance hybrid motor technology that can be used for nanosat, smallsat, sub-orbital vehicles and ultimately orbital launch vehicles. SpaceDev's hybrid propulsion system has manned flight heritage (SpaceShipOne) .
