Developing the firm's biology-guided radiotherapy system (BgRT) - using PET imaging agent and targeted therapeutic x-ray to deliver high doses of radiation to multiple lesion sites, while sparing surrounding healthy tissue - Reflexion Medical is actively building its R&D organization with a focus on mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, medical physics and high-energy physics. - A privately held medical device company, the firm's BgRT system uses a PET imaging agent and targeted therapeutic x-ray to deliver high doses of radiation to multiple lesion sites, while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. By leveraging Positron Emission Tomography (PET) in a novel way, RefleXion's patented technology allows tumors continuously to signal their location during treatment -- potentially revolutionizing the practice of radiation oncology. Personalized Biologically guided treatments are enabled with PET tracers that can probe areas of hypoxia, proliferation, or other functional/biological characteristics of a tumor. With direct biological targeting, treatment is simplified so that even cases with multiple targets exhibiting significant motion can be handled easily and systematically. During PET imaging, a patient is injected with a radiotracer and areas that uptake the tracer become signal emitters. These emissions are in the form of back-to-back or coincident photons. Coincident photon pairs are then captured by PET detectors over a period of several minutes and used to reconstruct a tomographic image of the tracer distribution in the body.
