Public Profile

Headquartered in Salt Lake City but having facilities in Europe and several Asian locations, Blackrock Microsystems is focused on becoming among the world’s leading providers of technology in the neuroscience, neural engineering, and neural prosthetics space. The company’s technology is at the core of worldwide innovations in Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI/BCI), implantable bionic technologies and epilepsy diagnostics. Most impactful implantations of the Utah Array have been in some tetraplegic individuals from University of Pittsburgh’s Nathan Copeland, who controlled a prosthetic arm to fist bump US President Barack Obama in 2016; Ohio State University’s Ian Burkhart who is learning to control an automobile, and CalTech’s Nancy Smith who is learning to play a virtual piano. Seemingly easy tasks, all have used the Utah Array to translate their thoughts into action to restore function. The firm offers Neuroport, a system for recording and analysis of human brain electrical activity; and Cerebus system, a multichannel system for recording and analyzing animal brain and peripheral-nerve electrical activity. The company also provides Stim Switch, which enables electrode-switching control for neural stimulation applications by enabling neural recordings immediately after stimulation; and NeuroMotive, a digital video tracking system for capturing audio, video, tracking coordinates, and user-inserted events during experiments with behaving subjects. In addition, the company provides NPlay, which enables researchers to replay raw data post experiment to fine-tune signal processing, such as digital filters, spike detection, and spike sorting; NeuroExplorer, a neurophysiological data analysis package that provides researchers with s suite of visualization and analysis tools; and MATLAB development kits that enable researchers to develop custom real-time and offline programs for visualization and analyzing neurophysiology data. Furthermore, it offers surgical training and support services. Serving neuroscience researchers and physicians worlwide, Blackrock is based in Salt Lake City, Utah with offices in Cologne, and Hanover Germany. The firm offers its products through distributors in Beijing, China; Tokyo, Japan; and Taoyuan Hsien, Taiwan.
