In April 2018, Civionics LLC was acquired by Grace Engineered Products, an Iowa-based firm specializing in electrical safety devices. Originally spun out from technology developed at the University of Michigan, Civionics LLC works in the development of sensor-driven predictive analytics for advanced engineered systems, specializing in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) sensing technology. The firm provides AI-based, wireless sensing, control and analytics systems to optimize resource utilization. Civionics has gained valuable market experience building configurable, scalable, wireless systems for civil, naval and energy applications. Some of the companyâs early projects, funded largely by various federal R&D grants, have included: a highly distributed wireless system that monitored hull strain in naval vessels; a low-cost wireless monitoring system for urban search-and-rescue personnel for finding survivors in partially and totally collapsed buildings; and a wireless system to accurately detect a building occupantâs presence and level of activity. Civionicsâ technology offers a unique combination of best practices from structural engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, wireless networking, and information theory. The firmâs data collecting sensors process information before transmitting and the firmâs systems significantly reduce the amount of data that needs to be communicated wirelessly. This method reduces or eliminates problems such as lack of sufficient bandwidth, limited battery life, inadequate storage capacity, and decision-making paralysis due to data in
