Anchored in three patents licensed from Wayne State University and with substantial support (financial and otherwise) from UNiversity of Michigan and other State entotoes, Mitovation has built a prototype device designed to tackle post ischemia brain injury: cell damage that occurs due to lack of blood flow after heart attacks. Described as looking like a bicycle helmet, the device shoots infrared light through the skull and into the brain - resuscitating and enabling blood flow: reperfusion. WSU research shows that a combination of various wavelengths of infrared light minimizes cell damage in the brain during reperfusion. Very well funded by various federal, state and private sources before Mitovation took over the project, the irm is headed up by someone well experienced in the complex task of technology commercialization inthe medical device space.
