The battle against crop-stealing birds may get easier with a computer-control system for propane cannons that's already in use at air-ports, says inventor Thomas Morse who showed the idea at the recent South Dakota Inventors Congress in Brookings.
The technology was originally developed for the Air Force. It consists of a microprocessor that provides "smart" firing of an individual cannon or group of cannons, either on demand or at preset times.
"It can be controlled by an existing radio communications system," Morse says.
"Works with the most popular propane cannons. The cannons could be controlled from either the farm operating center or from a hand-held or mobile unit."
Morse is adapting airport commercial systems - which sell for up to $150,000 - to farm use. He expects his system to sell for about $1,000 per cannon, plus $3,000 for the central processor.
