Fiber optic transceiver and optoelectronic integrated circuit maker SDL [SDLI] has added to its fiber optic product capabilities with the purchase of Canadian-based Seastar Optics, which also makes laser diodes. The purchase price was approximately $17 million.
"A number of Seastar Optics' OEM customers are quite pleased that Seastar Optics' products will be further strengthened and backed by SDL's reputation for high reliability and product quality," says SDL CEO Donald Scifres. Two of Seastar's major OEMs have placed "significant new orders" based in part on the alliance, he adds.
Synergy between the two companies is expected to lead to new products next year …
