Transcend Engineering and Technology, LLC was recently awarded a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the US Department of Energy to perform research of a soil moisture sensing concept that uses an electromagnetic method to determine soil moisture in profile. PRISMS, for Profile Resolving In-Situ Soil Moisture Sensor, is intended to be permanently installed in boreholes to provide measurements critical to furthering the understanding of moisture distribution and flux in unsaturated soils. It may eventually be used to determine moisture inventory in soils as early warning for landslide hazards, and for helping better understanding near surface moisture available for atmosphere-land surface exchanges in studying climate dynamics.
