Spun out of research at the University of California Davis, Atocera Inc develops silicon blades for use in surgical applications. The blades can also be used for shaving. The end of the blade is only two atoms across, has a sharper edge than a steel blade, and is less expensive than a ceramic or diamond blade. The company's patented method builds blades on the surface of silicon wafers rather than sharpening the wafer down. These blades are inexpensive and disposable.
