The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded $1.8 million to H2Pump LLC of Latham to help accelerate the commercialization of an energy-saving technology while also helping state manufacturers reduce operating expenses.
The funding will help install six of H2Pump's hydrogen-recycling devices at four sites around New York State. It will demonstrate the energy- and cost-savings that can be achieved through the capture, purification and recirculation of hydrogen used during industrial processes such as metal heat-treating and semiconductor fabrication.
The hydrogen is not consumed in these applications, but instead is used to create a specialized atmosphere for chemical processes. Typically, the hydrogen is released to the atmosphere after a single application. Using H2Pump's technology, up to 90 percent of the hydrogen used will be recovered, purified, pressurized, and returned for reuse. This significantly reduces the cost of the hydrogen needed, as well as the use of petroleum and subsequent emissions due to hydrogen production and transport.

"Public-private partnerships provide the foundation upon which the State can assist cleantech companies to move their products toward commercialization, in turn creating jobs and stimulating the economy."
There are tens of thousands of furnaces in operation that use at least a 20 percent hydrogen atmosphere -- all potential customers for H2Pump. The hydrogen provides an oxygen-free atmosphere that enhances productivity and product quality.
H2Pump was founded in 2005 and began to develop this technology a year later. The company, which has doubled its staff in the past two years, currently has 15 full-time and three part-time employees and plans to add employees as this project unfolds.
The company's hydrogen recycling systems will be manufactured in Rochester by Zeller Corp.
Installation of the HRS-100™ recycling systems is planned for early 2013. The 18-month-long program is designed to validate and quantify the benefits of recycling hydrogen from industrial processes and to develop a "best practices" guidebook that will help promote proper use of the technology. H2Pump will work with third-party commissioning engineers to install, operate and document the benefits.

The technology will be demonstrated at the following locations:
Two units at Rome Strip Steel, Rome. Rome Strip Steel (RSS) is a family owned business founded in 1926. It manufacturers a variety of strip-steel products and is the only steel strip manufacturer currently in New York.
One unit at Pall Corporation, Cortland. Pall Corp. is a global leader in the high-tech filtration, separation and purification industry. The $2.7 billion global company makes fluid management devices for hospital, blood center, laboratory, airline and municipal water use.
Two units at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering's (CNSE) Albany NanoTech Complex, to demonstrate the pump's viability in chip fabrication and nanotechnology. CNSE works with over 300 corporate partners amid a growing footprint in next-generation technology development across New York State.
