M/A-COM Technology Solutions Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: MTSI), announced today it has acquired North Carolina-based Nitronex for $26 million in cash.

The acquisition will provide the Lowell, Mass.-based MACOM with innovative semiconductor process technology and materials, making its gallium nitride technology portfolio one of the broadest in the industry, according to a release.

MACOM is a provider analog, radio frequent, microwave and millimeter wave products. Nitronex designs and manufactures gallium nitride-based radio frequency products.

Gallium nitride technology has been viewed as the driver of the next generation of radio frequency and microwave applications, said John Croteau, president and CEO of MACOM.

"With today's announcement, MACOM now provides what we believe to be the industry's largest portfolio of (gallium nitride) devices," he said.

It's the second acquisition for MACOM in four months. In November, the firm announced the acquisition of California-based Mindspeed Technologies Inc. in a cash transaction valued at $272 million.
