M Cubed Technologies, Inc. (Newark, DE), has taken knowledge gleaned from its work with MDA and built the company into a mainstay of the nation's body-armor industry.

The company, founded nearly 20 years ago, develops and manufactures strong, lightweight ceramic tiles that can meet the ruggedness needs for both law enforcement officers and soldiers in the field.

The company received Phase II SBIR funding from MDA in 2003 for the rapid manufacture of stiff, light advanced materials. After completing the SBIR contract, M Cubed researchers used advances made through the company's MDA work to develop a high-grade material for use in body armor. In less than a decade, M Cubed has scored tens of millions of dollars in contracts to manufacture more than 1 million composite ceramic plates for use by police, private security, military forces, and other customers. In 2010 the Army awarded the company a Commercialization Excellence Award for developing a product that has a significantly reduced propensity for cracking, while using about one-fourth the amount of raw materials that would be needed to manufacture conventional body-armor materials.
