In April 2013, PSI announced the sale of Maxion to Throlabs. Previously Maxion was acquired by SBIR-Active firm Physical Sciences Inc. Maxion Technologies Inc develops semiconductor lasers for the wireless optical telecommunications and chemical sensing industries. Maxion's laser products enable free-space optical telecommunications links that operate reliably in poor weather conditions. This companys semiconductor laser products provide compact sources of coherent radiation at any wavelength between 3 and 12 microns. The lasers enable a wide range of chemical sensing and other products, which include remote explosives detectors (RDX & PETN), non-invasive glucose monitors, portable respiration sensors of disease markers (ethane, pentane), and sources for infrared countermeasures. Maxion sells a variety of distributed feedback, single-mode and Fabry-Perot multi-mode laser products, as well as light emitting diodes and cavity LEDs. Laser products can be integrated into Maxions turnkey laser system, which features integrated thermal and electrical control that require minimal set-up time.
