KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Cerner Corporation (Nasdaq: CERN) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Multum Information Services Inc., a supplier to the healthcare industry of drug knowledge databases and intelligent software components that improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of medical care. Cerner plans to incorporate Multum's drug information and expert dosing components into its Health Network Architecture (HNA) Millennium solutions to enable Multum's expert knowledge to become executable within the process of care delivery. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Multum's extensive global research efforts have yielded the company's flagship product, Medisource(TM), which provides the most comprehensive patient-specific drug information available. Multum is the first company to deliver this extensive knowledge engine as a software development kit that can be easily integrated into other healthcare information systems. Its product line also includes a comprehensive database of drug information, disease-specific therapeutic pathways, and patient education materials. Multum's clinical content complements efforts already underway at Cerner and several other companies, especially in the areas of structured data acquisition and point-of-care decision support. Multum's products are also unique in the degree to which they support the information needs of both physicians and pharmacists.

Neal L. Patterson, Cerner's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "We believe it is vital to help caregivers pursue best practices through the use of intelligence built into their information systems. Multum has an impressive list of client relationships in which content is deployed effectively in a number of suppliers' information systems. We intend to help Multum support these developments with the same professionalism and excellent service that these clients are currently receiving. We believe Multum's extensive body of executable knowledge will also significantly enhance Cerner's industry-leading clinical decision support capabilities, allowing caregivers to provide the best quality care and avoid costly adverse drug events."

Timothy McNamara, M.D., Vice President of Research and Development, Multum, said, "We are pleased to have the opportunity to join the Cerner family and to make a significant contribution to realizing Cerner's vision. We look forward to continuing to provide the highest quality drug information and dosing solutions for the benefit of our current and future clients and their patients."

Multum Information Services Inc., founded in 1992, is privately held. The company has approximately 40 employees based in Denver, Colo.
