Chipmaker Silicon Space Technology Corp. is rebranding itself as Vorago Technologies Inc. as part of a product line expansion strategy.
The Austin semiconductor company disclosed Wednesday the addition of extreme temperature-hardened solutions to its technology in tandem with the name change. Vorago Technologies, founded in 2004, develops semiconductors designed to withstand extreme environments using its Hardsil technology. It employs 18 workers. It originally went after the space industry, but executives think that with the proliferation of "the Internet of things" there are plenty of applications on Earth, which has plenty of extreme conditions itself.

The rebranding comes five months after Vorago named former Advanced Micro Devices Inc. executive Bernd Lienhard as its new CEO, replacing interim CEO David Patterson. Lienhard was previously AMD's corporate vice president and general manager with the Austin-based client business unit.
