With facilities now in Reston and in Richmond, VA, Perfusion Medical is structured around commercializing PEG-20k, a breakthrough approach for restoration of tissue perfusion developed by researchers at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. With the VCU work in the space originally funded (c.$10M) by the Army, PEG-20k is a promising adjunct for resuscitation of hypovolemic patients (civilian and military). Perfusion Medical has licensed PEG-20k from Virginia Commonwealth University and is planning initial clinical trials at the VCU School of Medicine. The major mechanism of action of PEG-20k IV solution in treating severe hypovolemic shock is to increase tissue perfusion to facilitate rapid transfer of oxygen into oxygen starved tissues and organs. This is accomplished by reversing the metabolic cell and tissue swelling that occurs during shock, which causes no reflow by capillary compression.
