In Summer 2000, Gamera Bioscience Corporation was acquired by the Swiss firm TECAN, provider of lab automation systems. Gamera Bioscience Corporation began operations to commercialize sophisticated assays for untrained users in non-clinical and clinical testing environments. Within its first two years of operation, the firm developed and patented an automated DNA amplification and detection systems. As the company worked to implement these assays in a minaturized format, it was recognized that no universal technology had been developed which was capable of automating these and other chemistries. To that end, Gamera Bioscience created the LabCD(tm),a microfluidic platform that automates and integrates most laboratory processes, such as sample distribution and metering , fluid transfer, fluid mixing, reagent delivery and detection. Having characterized most processes from a macro to a micro scale format, Gamera is in a strong position to develop innovative products for multiple markets. Through its development program, Gamera has demonstrated the labCD can support a large number of different applications in the life science / drug discovery, clinical / molecular diagnostics, food / dairy, agricultural, veterinary and environmental markets.
