Spun off from Therus with a different application for ultrasound to stop bleeding designated "high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)" The effort was to try to develop a lightweight portable machine for use by the military on the battlefield to stop bleeding. AcousTx had been an early stage medical device company dedicated to developing image guided therapeutic medical products to treat significant medical needs. Using various forms of image guided energy, such as ultrasound or radio frequency, the targeted tissue it was argued could be functionally modified to accomplish the same effects as implanted devices but without the inherent risks
