Phase I

Contract Number: ----------
Start Date: ----    Completed: ----
Phase I year
2003
Phase I Amount
$63,840
This Phase I proposal determines feasibility of the project by achieving orchid plant height suppression, specifically to 30 inches, and assessing market acceptance of the new product. APPROACH: Rates and regimen of plant growth retardants will be tested for height suppression of oncidinae orchids. Resulting plants will be tested for market acceptance. Accomplishment of Phase I objectives will allow for development in Phase II of (1) a production protocol for treating plants on a scaled up version, (2) a research protocol for testing more varieties of orchids for commercialization, (3) test-marketing of orchid plants with suppressed height under a value-added packaging that has a registered trademark, and (4) enlisting grower participation, achieving industry-wide benefits. NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: Potted orchids have a wholesale value of $100 million and are the second-ranked flowering-plant in the U.S. The major problem for Hawaii producers is distance from market and high air transportation costs of tall plants. This proposal seeks to address this problem through an innovative coordinated production and marketing system. By developing new technology to control orchid plant height, coordinated with adding value through new plant forms and packaging that addresses transportation costs and needs of buyers, this innovative system directly addresses the problem of distance to market. Achieving plant height suppression of oncidinae orchids in a grower setting, and documenting market acceptability of the new plant forms will mark feasibility of the proposed innovative coordinated production and marketing system for flowering orchid plants. Technologically controlled forms of orchid plants will result in lower shipping costs and innovative plant products, which, combined with branding, value-added packaging and participation by orchid growers will result in long-term competitiveness of Hawaii growers in overseas markets, and sustain one of Hawaii's most promising specialty crop industries.

Phase II

Contract Number: ----------
Start Date: ----    Completed: ----
Phase II year
2004
Phase II Amount
$200,000
Potted orchids has a wholesale value of $107 million and is the second-ranked flowering-plant in the U.S. Technologically controlled forms of orchid plants to specific height parameters will result in lower shipping costs and innovative plant products, which, combined with value-added packaging will result in long-term competitiveness of Hawaii growers in overseas markets, and sustain one of Hawaii's most promising specialty crop industries.
