The Navy is currently experiencing reduced readiness for maintenance operations. Maintenance technicians are not always resourced with all necessary and up-to-date reference documents and have limited access to such documents. AR solutions have currently been applied to training in both military and commercial domains to help bridge the gap. However the current solutions dont serve as an organic pipeline of training content, dont store audio/visual remote assistance for future reference, and are limited to a centralized website only. An opportunity exists to develop an AR training solution that captures remote collaboration discourse and permits rapid, human-in-the-loop assembly of expertise sensitive training modules that can be accessed in real time, at the point of need. Design Interactive Inc. proposes the development of Store, Categorize, Analyze, and Transfer Training for Enterprise Readiness (SCATTER), an augmented reality system that extracts potential training content captured from the discourse between a master maintainer and a trainee during a remote-assisted scenario. SCATTER will couple the categorized and analyzed content with geographical positioning (e.g., position relative to equipment) and supportive virtual content overlays (e.g., schematics, animations, etc.) in order to support maintainers of all proficiency levels in increasing their effectiveness and efficiency.

Benefit:
SCATTER will provide a user-friendly, commercially available AR system for military maintenance technicians that provides relevant maintenance references and facilitates master and apprentice maintainer discourse. SCATTER has the potential to result in improved maintenance operations, leading to: 1. Improved Training and Readiness: Improved availability of maintenance reference material will provide the right training at the right time with the right methodology, and result in decreased maintenance errors required for support of key National Defense Strategy objectives. 2. Enhanced Remote Assistance: More efficient and effective remote operation support through distributed environment assistance will afford more timely and accurate maintenance. 3. Rapid and Organic Content Creation: Enhanced maintainer AR training content collection, storage, categorization and analysis capabilities will lead to tailored schoolhouse and on-site training, impactful continuing education activities, and result in greater training efficiency and maintainer knowledge retention. 4. Decreased Training Cost: Decreased training costs due to pedagogical sound AR content generation that leverages expert maintainer guidance and readily available maintainer reference material will lead to an organic, personalized training pipeline that results in decreased training cost.
