The firm will develop a conceptual design of a one-atmospherediving suit suitable for use by NASA in support of its requirements foran improved system with which to conduct EVA training exercises in aneutral buoyancy environment. The project will identify the designcriteria required for support of these training activities, develop alist of suit functions required, survey the state-of-the-art andevaluate same for appropriateness of technology transfer to thisproject, and develop a conceptual design for a working prototype.Additionally, requirements for new materials will be identified andtheir suitability evaluated. Phase II development requirements will beoutlined. NASA will benefit through more cost-effective use of trainingresources and expanded training capabilities through the utilization ofa less expensive training system and freedom from current personneldecompression limitations resulting in expanded training time.Astronaut-trainees will benefit directly from greater comfort, increasedmobility and range of motion, and greater safety through freedom fromhyperbaric exposures.Applications could include subsea oil and gas development; nuclear powerplant underwater inspection, maintenance, and repair; marine science andacademic R&D; commercial diving applications, and liquid tank storageinspections.diving, EVA-training, astronaut, underwaterSTATUS: Phase I Only
