Corvid Technologies proposes to design a fragmention warhead around a notional kill vehicle (KV) that is optimized to kill highly maneuverable Targets (HMTs) without a direct hit using high fidelity modeling and simulation techniques. The concept for the proposed design is to use a small amount of high explosives (HE) to dispense a wall of fragments into the path of the incoming HMT. This design uses the high momentum of the HMT against it, and allows us to maximize the number of fragments that can be packaged into the payload, while reducing the HE mass. Corvid’s design focuses on using fragments that are optimized to destroy the aeroshell of the HMT as much as possible, so that after the impact the HMT is killed due to aerodynamic breakup and high thermal loading on internal components. These threats fly at very adverse aerodynamic and thermal conditions, and thus destroying a section of the aeroshell/thermal shield would destabilize and lead to the demise of the HMT in a short time period.
