NanoSonic is a small advanced materials company with expertise in the development of new materials using additive manufacturing (AM) processes and prototyping existing products with methodology that enables performance enhancements and cost reduction. In this SBIR program, NanoSonic shall prototype Otto Fuel Coveralls, NSN 8415-01-562-6728(s)/PGC: 03538, using seamless dipping AM techniques in support of DLA’s Nuclear and General Warfighting Requirements (GWR). During Phase I, NanoSonic shall produce Otto Fuel Protective Type I Aprons, NSN 8415-PGC03538, per the technical data package (TDP) requirements outlined in: Purchase Description NCTRF PD 03-07C, Palletizing Units MIL-STD-147E (w/Change 2), Military Marking for Shipment and Storage MIL-STD-129R (w/Change 2), and Labeling DLA Textile Items MIL-DTL-32075. We shall broaden the NSNs with the production of Type II shirts, Type III Trousers, and Type IV Coveralls. Additionally, NanoSonic has teamed with HNu Photonics and Lockheed Martin to further expand on the NSNs to produce fuel bladders for the MK48 Torpedo and to introduce anti-counterfeit Track-and-trace (XTG) smart tag labelling technology during the option and later Phases. This will enable NanoSonic to expand the number of NSNs to increase capacity and fulfillment of both DLA and Lockheed Martin production requirements and to reduce counterfeiting in the supply chain.

Phase II

Contract Number: SP4701-22-C-0008
Start Date: 11/18/2021    Completed: 5/17/2023

NanoSonic has developed advanced materials and seaming technology for leak-free personal protective equipment that offer improved quality at a lower cost for the health and safety of torpedo handlers and all personnel exposed to Otto Fuel II. In this DLA SBIR program, NanoSonic shall deliver Type IV Coveralls, First Articles, and End Items to Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Division Keyport to become an approved source of NSN 8415-01-562-6728(s)/PGC: 03538). NanoSonic has expertise in the sewn construction of high-quality complex pattered garments and the production of inflatable seamed polyolefin structures that use the base materials in the Otto Fuel Coveralls. NanoSonic shall produce new thermoplastic tape and coated polyolefin fabric materials that meet NCTRF PD 03-07C and develop innovative additive manufacturing techniques that offer overall reductions in Otto Fuel permeation. During Phase II of this DLA SBIR program NanoSonic shall extrude thermoplastic heat seaming tape with tailored dimensions and thermal properties, coat fabrics via seamless dipping for increased resistance to Otto Fuel II permeation, and sew and heat seam Type IV coveralls. NanoSonic has teamed with Virginia Tech, Ms. Audres, and Lockheed Martin to achieve authorization to participate as an Approved Source for the specific NSN in future procurements.
