It is proposed to develop a portable, lightweight neutron source for detection and location of mines via nuclear activation of the high-explosive material (HE). It is further proposed to develop the technical base required to plan a demonstration of neutron activation of HE base mine detection in a field environment. The latter task requires a study of neutron transport from the source, through the intervening soil, and the interaction of the resulting neutron spectrum with a HE target surrounded by the remaining components of a mine. In addition, a combined boom-mounted source/detector package will be conceptually designed.
